It's not too late to change careers!
Changing careers can be difficult for a number of reasons and one of the main reasons is the financial responsibilities that come with getting older...
Does anyone actually love what they do for work? A very small percentage, most likely. The truth is, finding a job or career in a field which you're most passionate about, doesn't tend to pay a lot...to begin with.
By the time you decide you don't like what you do for work, it's probably too late to pursue that thing which you love. Why? As you progress in your current career, you generally accumulate more financial responsibilities such as mortgages, car payments, or needing to support your new family. These obligations can make it difficult to take a pay cut or start at an entry-level position in a new career. Additionally, many people have established themselves in their current career and have built up a certain level of expertise and reputation. It can be challenging to start from scratch in a new field and to compete with others who may have more experience and qualifications in that field, which you're passionate about.
Some other reasons include:
- Lack of experience: Changing careers often means starting over in a new industry where you have little to no experience. This can be especially challenging if the new career requires specific skills or qualifications that you do not possess.
- Fear of the unknown: Stepping out of your comfort zone and into a new career can be intimidating, particularly if you have been in your current career for a long time. You may be hesitant to take risks or try something new, fearing that it won't work out.
- Age discrimination: Unfortunately, age discrimination can be a factor when changing careers. Some employers may view older workers as less adaptable, less tech-savvy, or less energetic than their younger counterparts.
Finally, changing careers can be emotionally difficult as well. People often identify strongly with their career and may feel a sense of loss or uncertainty when considering a change. Fear of the unknown and uncertainty about the future can also make it hard to take the leap and pursue a new career path.
Overall, changing careers can be a challenging process, but it is not impossible. It often requires compromise, careful planning, a willingness to take risks, and a strong support system to help navigate the transition.
